After all the car import steps have been carried out, the Swiss registration and the Swiss licence plate will be issued at the end. Admission takes place in the respective canton of residence during opening hours. Proof of insurance is required for admission. This proof is sent electronically by the insurance company to the Road Traffic Office.

The Import-Butler takes over the registration for you no matter in which canton you live and saves you the preparation of the import registration dossier and the visit to the registration office.

The registration types for vehicles in Switzerland

In Switzerland there are basically three different types of registration for car imports.

  1. New solution: You will receive a new Swiss licence plate when it is approved.
  2. Vehicle change: You already have a license plate and replace your new car with your old one in the same procedure.
  3. Change plate: You already have a car on your existing license plate and now include a second additional vehicle on the same number.

The Swiss licence plate number

If you register your import car in Switzerland, you will usually be randomly assigned a license plate number. However, you can also bid for a number via the auction platform of the Road Traffic Office. There are no upper limits to the costs of the auction. For this reason, the licence plate number SG 1 (Canton of St.Gallen) was also purchased at auction for CHF 135,000. Try your luck. You can find the platform on the homepage of the Road Traffic Office.
