Car import from Norway

Norway is the special case among source countries: not an EU member, but home to the most developed electric-car market in Europe. If you are looking for a used EV, the choice there is unmatched.

The electric-car market is the main argument

Hardly any country has as many electric vehicles on the road as Norway. The used market is correspondingly large and varied – from compact cars to executive models, often well equipped and with a complete service history. For a Swiss import that is doubly interesting: pure electric vehicles emit no CO₂, so no CO₂ levy applies. The 4% automobile tax and 8.1% Swiss VAT are, however, due on electric cars as well.

Norway is not in the EU – what that means

Norway belongs to the EEA but not to the EU and not to the EU customs territory. The export therefore runs through a Norwegian export clearance rather than an EU one. Because Norway applies EU type approval, a CoC document is usually still available – the basis for a smooth Swiss registration. One thing to know about the price: used cars that have already been registered in Norway are normally sold without Norwegian VAT. In that case there is no VAT for you to reclaim either. The one-off registration tax (engangsavgift) contained in the Norwegian price is generally not refunded on export. So do not expect the refund effect you get on EU imports – we will check your specific case before you buy.

Process, transport and costs

You buy from the Norwegian dealer, we obtain the documents (CoC, vehicle papers), handle the Norwegian export clearance and organise the insured transport. In Switzerland we take care of import clearance, any CO₂ levy, the MFK inspection and registration. The distance is substantial: transports from Norway take considerably longer and cost more than from Germany. We arrange them on request – send us the pick-up location and you will get a concrete quote. The Swiss charges can be calculated up front in the calculator.
