Car import from Sweden
At 25%, Sweden has the highest VAT rate among the common source countries – and therefore the largest reclaim potential. On top of that comes a vehicle fleet that is unusually well equipped by Swiss standards.
Advantages of importing from Sweden
Swedish VAT (moms) is 25%. If you buy standard-rated from a VAT-registered dealer, you can reclaim that amount in full after the export – proportionally more than from any other European market. Swedish cars also tend to be better equipped: auxiliary heating, heated seats and all-wheel drive are frequently standard rather than expensive options. For buyers in the mountain cantons that is a genuine advantage.
What to watch out for with a Swedish import
Swedish winters mean salted roads. Check the underbody and rust protection carefully – on older vehicles an independent valuation before the purchase is money well spent. Also make sure the dealer sells standard-rated and shows the VAT on the invoice. On margin-scheme vehicles there is no 25% to reclaim.
Process, transport and costs
The process matches any other EU import: purchase from the Swedish dealer, procurement of the documents (CoC, certificate of origin), Swedish export clearance, insured transport to Switzerland, then import clearance, the CO₂ levy, the MFK inspection and registration. Distance is the main difference: transport from Sweden takes considerably longer and costs more than from Germany. We arrange transports from Sweden on request – get in touch with the specific pick-up location and we will quote the transport cost. The Swiss charges (8.1% VAT, 4% automobile tax, CO₂ levy) can be calculated up front in the calculator.
