Car import from Poland

Poland is one of the largest used-car markets in Europe and known for low prices. Polish VAT of 23% is fully reclaimable on a standard-rated dealer purchase.

Advantages of importing from Poland

The Polish market is large, liquid and attractively priced. Platforms such as Otomoto list a very broad offering – including many German-origin vehicles that were resold into Poland and are offered there below the price in their country of origin. Polish VAT is 23%. On a standard-rated purchase with the VAT shown on the invoice you get that amount back after the export – which makes the price advantage even clearer.

Take care with history and paperwork

There is a reason for the lower price, and it is not always just the market. Check the vehicle history, mileage and accident record particularly carefully, and ask to see the complete vehicle documents. An independent valuation before the purchase is money well spent here – it protects you from unpleasant surprises and at the same time provides a solid basis for the customs value. Also make sure the dealer sells standard-rated; under the margin scheme (VAT marża) there is no 23% to reclaim.

Process and costs of a Polish import

The process matches any other EU import: purchase from the Polish dealer, procurement of the documents (CoC, certificate of origin), Polish export clearance, insured transport to Switzerland, then import clearance, the CO₂ levy, the MFK inspection and registration. Swiss charges are 8.1% VAT and 4% automobile tax. Transports from Poland take longer and cost more than from Germany; we arrange them on request. All other costs can be calculated up front in the calculator.
