IVI registration

Practically new imported vehicles need no MFK inspection at all: under the IVI procedure the Federal Roads Office (ASTRA) takes the technical data straight from the manufacturer's electronic certificate, and you are registered at the road traffic office counter without a technical inspection. Provided the vehicle has an eCOC registered in Switzerland, has under 2,000 km, was first registered less than a year ago and carries a brand registered with ASTRA.

What is an IVI vehicle?

IVI stands for "Initial Vehicle Information". Imported vehicles whose technical data comes directly from the manufacturer's electronic EC certificate of conformity (eCOC) are recorded as IVI vehicles. No Swiss type approval is needed: ASTRA takes over the data electronically, and field 24 of the vehicle registration document shows "IVI" or "IVIX" instead of a type approval number.

Which vehicles are eligible for IVI?

The IVI procedure applies only to practically new vehicles. All four conditions must be met together: 1. The vehicle has an eCOC that is registered in Switzerland – this is where ASTRA takes the technical data from. 2. The brand is registered with ASTRA for IVI (list further down). 3. Mileage under 2,000 km at the time of import. 4. First registration less than one year before the import date. If any one of these is missing, registration follows the normal route with an MFK inspection – which we of course organise for you just the same.

How does IVI registration work?

After customs clearance, the vehicle is reported to ASTRA with an import notification – we take care of this step for you. ASTRA and the Swiss Federal Office of Energy (SFOE) record the vehicle based on the eCOC as part of CO₂ enforcement; you then receive an ASTRA confirmation. With it, the vehicle can be registered directly at the road traffic office counter.

When is the MFK waived – and when not?

Once the four conditions are met, the technical inspection is waived – but only as long as the vehicle is in its delivery condition. As soon as it has been modified, the road traffic office requires an inspection again. Typical triggers are a retrofitted tow hitch, non-original wheels or tyres, a suspension or exhaust conversion, and altered lighting. If you are unsure whether your vehicle still counts as unmodified, we check before filing the notification.

What this means for your import

In practice you save two things: the inspection appointment and the wait for it. Instead of an inspection, possible fault rectification and a re-check, you walk up to the counter with the ASTRA confirmation. We can tell from the eCOC, the brand, the mileage and the first registration date whether your chosen vehicle is IVI-eligible before you even buy it. Just ask us – or start by calculating your import costs.
