Car import from Austria
As a direct neighbour, Austria is especially attractive for vehicle imports: short transport distances, a large selection on willhaben.at, and an Austrian VAT of 20% that can be reclaimed in full after export.
Advantages of importing from Austria
As a direct neighbour, Austria offers one decisive advantage: short transport distances. Your vehicle reaches Switzerland quickly and at lower transport costs than for an import from Benelux. You pay the Austrian VAT of 20% when buying from the dealer and can reclaim it in full after export. You'll find plenty of choice on willhaben.at, Austria's largest vehicle platform, with a wide range of new and used cars.
The import process from Austria
Importing from Austria works identically to importing from Germany or Benelux: 1. You purchase your chosen vehicle directly from the Austrian dealer. 2. We obtain the necessary documents (CoC, certificate of origin) and handle the export customs clearance. 3. Our transport partner collects the vehicle and brings it insured to Switzerland. 4. We handle import customs clearance, the CO₂ levy, the MFK roadworthiness inspection and registration in your canton.
Costs for an Austria import
Swiss import taxes (8.1% VAT + 4% automobile tax) apply to imports from Austria just as for imports from Germany. The Austrian VAT of 20% can be reclaimed from the dealer. Thanks to the short distance, transport costs from Austria are usually lower than from Benelux – the exact amount depends on the pick-up location. Use our calculator for a full cost overview in CHF.
