Car import from Czechia
Czechia combines central-European prices with a manageable distance to Switzerland. Czech VAT of 21% is fully reclaimable on a standard-rated dealer purchase.
Advantages of importing from Czechia
Czechia is geographically convenient: the extra distance compared with an import from southern Germany or Austria is modest, while prices are often noticeably lower than in the German-speaking market. The market is well stocked – alongside the domestic brands you will find a broad range of western European makes. Czech VAT (DPH) of 21% comes back to you in full after the export on a standard-rated purchase.
What to watch out for
As in any low-price market, it pays to look closely at the vehicle history, mileage and service records. Ask for the complete vehicle documents; for older or high-value cars an independent valuation is worthwhile. Clarify in advance whether the dealer sells standard-rated and shows the VAT on the invoice – only then is the 21% reclaimable.
Process and costs of a Czech import
The process is the same as for any EU import: purchase from the Czech dealer, procurement of the documents (CoC, certificate of origin), Czech export clearance, insured transport to Switzerland, then import clearance, the CO₂ levy, the MFK inspection and registration. Swiss charges are 8.1% VAT and 4% automobile tax, plus the CO₂ levy depending on the vehicle. Transports from Czechia are arranged on request – for every other item, use our calculator.
